Formulation
What is development?
A temporally ordered transformation of a system that results in the emergence, refinement, or reorganization of its functional capacities.
Development is a process of structured change over time characterized by:
- Directionality: change is not random but oriented (e.g., toward increased capacity, differentiation, integration, or efficiency).
- Constraint: development unfolds within material, biological, institutional, and cognitive limits.
- Path-dependence: earlier states condition later possibilities.
- Irreversibility (weak): development typically cannot be undone without loss or transformation.
What is the intellect?
The intellect is not a substance, faculty, or single capability. It is best understood as a system of cognitive functions that enable an agent to:
- (Representational capacity) Form representations of the world
- (Representational capacity) Manipulate abstract structures
- (Inferential machinery) Infer, generalize, and explain
- (Norm sensitivity) Evaluate consistency, validity, and relevance
- (Meta-cognition) Learn and revise internal models
What is intellectual development?
Intellectual development is the evolution of the intellect’s structure, scope, and control over time.
